Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:00:00 GMT http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/45484.html Ultrasound Allied Health Medicine Nursing Classroom eHealth Transformation Challenge on 4/11/2015 http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/45963.html Care givers of elderly patients with dementia face a number of barriers in providing care and assistance to loved ones. These barriers increase when the caregiver lives at a distance. Given the long term and worsening nature of dementia, care givers are often stretched to the breaking point trying to coordinate care for the patient while maintaining their own quality of life. In this data-driven era there are many sources of community and healthcare information that can expedite the care process and give hope to caregivers facing fatigue and burnout. During the eHealth Transformation Challenge participants will organize into teams to develop a proof-of-concept data mashup that combines multiple data sources into a personalized caregiver assistance utility. Teams will be judged on their proof-of-concept data mashups that prioritize options for caregivers based on patient data, targeted community resources, geographical data and technological innovations (wearables, social platforms, crowdsourcing, etc). The prize winning data-visualization will provide personalized solutions that improve the quality of life of caregivers and promote patient care. Sat, 11 Apr 2015 13:00:00 GMT http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/45963.html Public Health Classroom Neuromuscular Ultrasound on 4/9/2015 http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/45940.html The Neuromuscular Ultrasound course focuses on applications in muscle disease, peripheral and cranial nerve imaging, and an introduction to the use of ultrasound in evaluating musculoskeletal disorders. Lectures are integrated with hands-on demonstrations of technique and case interpretation. A small group format facilitates questions and answers and tailors the educational experience to meet the specific needs of individual participants. It is in real-time use of the instrument that the practitioner recognizes the importance of this type of basic knowledge and it is in this context that they can apply this knowledge to troubleshoot difficult imaging cases, identify artifacts, and improve resolution at the bedside. Thu, 02 Apr 2015 22:30:00 GMT http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/45832.html Dentistry Classroom Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ACT The Basics and Beyond on 3/27/2015 http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/43919.html Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique, evidence-based intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behavior change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. “Psychological flexibility” refers to behaving flexibly and effectively given one’s values and what the environment affords, and in the face of difficult thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. While ACT builds upon well-established cognitive-behavioral treatments, it engages issues and interventions that have often been associated with existential and humanistic psychological traditions. The evidence database for ACT is rapidly expanding. Recent studies have demonstrated that ACT is useful for treating a wide variety of difficulties, including traditionally conceived clinical conditions such as depression, anxiety, chronic stress, substance abuse, and even psychosis, as well as in the treatment of individuals with medical conditions, such as terminal cancer, chronic pain and type 2 diabetes. Our work has demonstrated ACT’s utility with eating disorders, including difficult to treat cases of anorexia nervosa and eating disturbances in the context of type 1 diabetes (a dangerous comorbidity). In addition, ACT’s benefits appear to be as important for the clinician as they are for clients: Empirical data have shown that ACT can significantly improve therapist burnout. This workshop is intended for all therapists interested in ACT as well as acceptance and mindfulness-oriented approaches more generally, regardless of their level of familiarity with the material. Case demonstrations and experiential exercises will be used to illustrate the application of ACT interventions to complex clinical cases. The term microaggression is an emerging one in the helping professions and can be useful in understanding impediments to a well-intentioned clinician’s ability to engage therapeutically with clients across a spectrum of differences. Throughout the various codes of ethics, there is a universal mandate to provide culturally sensitive care to clients. Yet, when microaggressions are unknowingly committed by the helping professional, communication suffers and credibility is lost with the client, which impedes the therapeutic process and may lead to early termination of services. Clinicians are therefore ethically compelled to enhance their understanding of microaggressions and work to minimize their occurrence when interacting with clients. Clinicians engage with a cross-section of society and therefore have a particular need to understand what microaggressions are, how they impact clients, and how they themselves have experienced or perpetrated microaggressions. NOTE: This program may be counted towards ethics requirements for license renewal.
Registration: To register for the Clinical Lecture Series in Winston-Salem, go to: http://ssw.unc.edu/sswevents/ws-cls-2015
If you are a first time participant, click on [Step 1: New Visitors] to watch a short video on how to create an account and register.
