The development of willed body programs largely supplanted the earlier reliance on so-called anatomy acts, legislation that made the bodies of indigent and unclaimed dead the property of the state that could be distributed to medical schools for the training of physicians. These acts in turn replaced an earlier practice of body-snatching and "resurrectionists," professionals who supplied the bodies of the newly dead to medical schools. Although the early history of anatomical procurement is well known, little attention has focused on the rise of willed body programs. This talk explores how and why willed body programs developed in the 1950s and how Americans volunteered to give their bodies to science. Rural men and women historically made up a disproportionate share of those in military service, a trend that has continued into the most recent conflicts. Fully 30% of the military personnel serving from 2001 to the present, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Operation Inherent Resolve, came from, and are now likely returning to, rural areas. Rural veterans struggle with the same barriers to obtaining mental health care as their civilian counterparts, including distance to facilities, paucity of trained providers, rugged terrain and geographical features that complicate travel, lack of transportation, and stigma. Additionally, mental health practitioners who provide services for veterans in either Veterans Affairs Medical Centers or in the community must be aware of unique ethical challenges they may face in the care of veterans especially those related to competence and confidentiality. Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating non-judgmental awareness from moment to moment. It is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in your life, a way of doing something for yourself that no one else can do for you. Mindfulness allows us to consciously and systematically work with our own stress, pain, illness, and the challenges and demands of everyday life. It helps us cultivate our potential to experience each moment, no matter how difficult or intense, with serenity and clarity. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a method of relating directly to the events in your life. It teaches us to consciously and systematically work through our life experiences and to develop healthy and positive approaches to handling life’s stressful challenges, whether they are physical, mental or emotional. Effective treatment requires the use of an approach that is supported by research such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Providers and caregivers often wonder what is involved in TF-CBT and how does it differ from “traditional”CBT? What children and caregivers are appropriate for this model? This program will answer those questions as well as covering recommended assessments, goals of treatment, and information about how to become trained. The second half of the program will provide direct and specific strategies for assisting children and their parents with managing the symptoms related to PTSD. This will include cognitive, emotional, and behavioral approaches. ACT has been tested in over 100 randomized controlled trials and is listed on SAMHSA’S National Registry of Evidenced Based Programs and Practices (NREEP) and the APA Division 12 / Society of Clinical Psychology as evidence-based practice for general mental health as well as specific conditions of anxiety, depression, psychosis and chronic pain. ACT conceptualizes problems in living as the result of psychological inflexibility, i.e., behavior rigidly guided by thoughts, feelings and other internal experiences, rather than personal values (what is important to the individual). ACT uses acceptance and mindfulness skills to help individuals contact the present moment more fully and behave in ways that are flexible, effective and personally meaningful.
This is a 2-day Intermediate ACT workshop designed to provide mental health professionals with a more in-depth understanding of the ACT model and its application. It is appropriate for clinicians with a wide range of exposure to the ACT model (including individuals who have not had any exposure), but is likely best matched for the clinician who has heard or read some about ACT, but could benefit from additional instruction that brings the model “to life.”
Day 1 will outline the principles of the model and the six component processes (i.e., acceptance, defusion, present moment awareness, self-as-context, values and committed action) and participants will practice case formulation.
Day 2 will provide a more in-depth orientation to the processes which includes demonstration and practice of specific techniques linked to the various processes (e.g., metaphors, experiential exercises). Participants are encouraged to bring de-identified case material for discussion or role play. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in “real” play (during which the processes are explored as they apply to the therapist). “Real” play is a hallmark of the ACT model and reflects the fact that ACT is not a model of psychopathology, but rather of general human functioning and adaptability, and thus applies to clinicians as well as clients. Primary care settings have become the gateway to the behavioral health system, and primary care providers need support and resources to screen and treat individuals with behavioral and general healthcare needs. The solution lies in integrated care, the systematic coordination of general and behavioral healthcare. Integrating mental health, substance use disorders, and primary care services produces the best outcomes and proves the most effective approach to caring for people with multiple healthcare needs.
This conference focuses on the policy, practice and outcomes management aspects of integrated care and provides attendees with an opportunity to examine what is needed to make an integrated care system work.
Keynote Speakers

Arthur E. Moreover, we measure successful outcomes in terms of reducing health disparities between ethnic groups. While ethnicity is a core aspect of cultural competency, we must broaden our conceptualizations to include not only respect, but also deeper understanding and connection; not only for adults, but also for children and adolescents; not only by ethnicity, but also by socioeconomic class, gender, faith, sexuality, and other categories of difference. Ultimately, we are striving for not only the absence of mental illness, but also the flourishing of mental health and wellness. In this workshop, we will explore strategies for using cultural competency as a means for understanding the impact of our own cultural narratives on our therapeutic role; better joining with children and adolescents we serve, and implementing and sustaining more effective interventions with the family system as a whole. Dr. Armstrong will utilize a combination of didactic material, personal reflection, experiential exercises, and group discussion to assist participants in embracing a deeper level of cultural competency, not only to benefit the clients we serve, but also to expand our own identity and humanity.
