Along with these service members there are approximately 3 million associated family members. In addition to those military personnel who continue to maintain an active military affiliation there are approximately 3 million military retirees and 23 million veterans who, while having transitioned from active service, still maintain their military connections, as well as their family responsibilities. These current and former service members and their families are an important part of our local communities but often have unique needs much different than society in general, especially those service members and their families who have experienced combat deployments. Today more and more civilian providers are being called upon to care for this unique population and their distinct needs, often with a gap in training and information that is available to their military counterparts. With this in mind it is the intent of this workshop to help fill in the gaps by providing essential information on working with military service members, veterans and their families within the context of the community setting. The failure to recognize the importance of this crisis of meaning in the genesis of physical and mental disorders is a serious deficit in the current medical system, which often treats the body while ignoring the soul. Dr. Madera has placed psychotherapy , philosophical practices and religion side by side in his discussion as any contemporary search for purpose can and must bring these three ways of searching for meaning together into a common coordinated field of action with a common background. This common background becomes apparent when we identify the common source of inspiration for the shared vocation to transcend egotism: the urge to go beyond the self to save the self through a wider and more all-embracing dimension of meaning.
Location
Belk Centrum
Lenoir-Rhyne University
Hickory, NC
Faculty
Romano Madera, Ph.D., Professor of Moral Philosophy and Philosophical Practices at the University of Milan – Bicocca (Italy)
Romano Madera graduated from the University of Milan in 1971 with a Ph.D. in philosophy later specializing in sociology at the School for Sociology in Milan from 1971-1973. One of the best validated and most effective approaches to changing distressed couple relationships into loving secure bonds is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Thirty years of scientific research validates the success rate of this model and shows its relapse rate is low compared to other couple therapies. 70-75% of couples treated with EFT move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. The core of EFT’s change process is to first help couples recognize and contain the circular patterns that keep them emotionally off balance and in distress, and then help them reshape the relationship bond with specific moments of emotional engagement and vulnerability that pull for attuned and compassionate responses. This process as well as the interventions, steps, and stages of Emotionally Focused Therapy will be explored through video clips. Discussion and video will demonstrate how attachment theory guides couple therapists in working with emotion and in choosing specific moment to moment interventions that transform relational distress into secure bonds of intimacy and love.
Presenter: Lorrie Brubacher, M.
