While ACT builds upon well¬-established cognitive-behavioral treatments, it engages issues and interventions that have often been associated with existential and humanistic psychological traditions. The evidence database for ACT is rapidly expanding. Recent studies have demonstrated that ACT is useful for treating a wide variety of difficulties, including traditionally conceived clinical conditions such as depression, anxiety, chronic stress, substance abuse, and even psychosis, as well as in the treatment of individuals with medical conditions, such as terminal cancer, chronic pain and type 2 diabetes. Our work has demonstrated ACT’s utility with eating disorders, including difficult to treat cases of anorexia nervosa and eating disturbances in the context of type 1 diabetes (a dangerous comorbidity). In addition, ACT’s benefits appear to be as important for the clinician as they are for clients: Empirical data have shown that ACT can significantly improve therapist burnout. This workshop is intended for all therapists interested in ACT as well as acceptance and mindfulness-oriented approaches more generally, regardless of their level of familiarity with the material. Case demonstrations and experiential exercises will be used to illustrate the application of ACT interventions to complex clinical cases. Thu, 05 Mar 2015 22:30:00 GMT http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/45126.html Dentistry Classroom UNC School of Social Work Clinical Lecture Series Microaggression as an Ethical Issue in Clinical Practice on 3/4/2015 http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/43847.html Microaggressions have been defined as brief everyday exchanges, often unintentional and automatic, that send denigrating messages to individuals because of their group membership (e.g., due to race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability). The term microaggression is an emerging one in the helping professions and can be useful in understanding impediments to a well-intentioned clinician’s ability to engage therapeutically with clients across a spectrum of differences. Throughout the various codes of ethics, there is a universal mandate to provide culturally sensitive care to clients. Yet, when microaggressions are unknowingly committed by the helping professional, communication suffers and credibility is lost with the client, which impedes the therapeutic process and may lead to early termination of services. Clinicians are therefore ethically compelled to enhance their understanding of microaggressions and work to minimize their occurrence when interacting with clients. Clinicians engage with a cross-section of society and therefore have a particular need to understand what microaggressions are, how they impact clients, and how they themselves have experienced or perpetrated microaggressions. NOTE: This program may be counted towards ethics requirements for license renewal.
Registration: To register for the Clinical Lecture Series in Winston-Salem, go to: http://ssw.unc.edu/sswevents/ws-cls-2015
If you are a first time participant, click on [Step 1: New Visitors] to watch a short video on how to create an account and register. Primary care settings have become the gateway to the behavioral health system, and primary care providers need support and resources to screen and treat individuals with behavioral and general healthcare needs. The solution lies in integrated care, the systematic coordination of general and behavioral healthcare. Integrating mental health, substance abuse, and primary care services produces the best outcomes and proves the most effective approach to caring for people with multiple healthcare needs. The conference focuses on the policy, practice and outcomes management aspects of integrated care and provides attendees with an opportunity to examine what is needed to make an integrated care system work. Aside from the veterans who returned home with mental health and substance use disorders years ago, our country can expect a tremendous influx of veterans with complex and confounding mental health and substance use disorders. The prevalence and scope of the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders are well documented and will represent an increasingly important area of clinical focus. In this changing landscape it is becoming more and more important for clinicians to become skilled in assessing for and treating SUDs. This training is designed to equip human service workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to best support our wounded service men and women. In addition to increasing the collective knowledge base, this training will cultivate a better understanding of the resources available through the Department of Veterans Affairs, state and local governments, and private enterprises. It will also promote a more thorough understanding of military culture, and its social implications on individuals, families and society. How professionals and neighbors respond after a suicide—both to those individual families and to the broader community—is an important part of suicide prevention efforts. Our interventions must be based on research that demonstrates what we’re doing is helpful and does not make things worse. This workshop will help participants understand why people kill themselves, what families and professionals can expect following a suicide death, and how we can combat the stigma around a death by suicide. We’ll look at postvention guidelines for families, clinicians, schools, and communities.
Registration: To register for the Clinical Lecture Series in Winston-Salem, go to: http://ssw.unc.edu/sswevents/ws-cls-2015
If you are a first time participant, click on [Step 1: New Visitors] to watch a short video on how to create an account and register.
