Social workers, psychologists, nurses and other helping professionals are not immune to ethical challenges as they strive to address difficult situations with scarce resources and increased pressures for productivity and efficiency. Often the dilemmas these professionals face are not simply a choice between right and wrong, but between two imperfect choices. This program is intended to build upon earlier ethics training and assist participants in examining difficult ethical dilemmas. After a review of core ethical principles and a decision making framework, participants will discuss complex ethical dilemmas provided by the instructor as well as those generated by the group, to determine options for addressing vexing ethics challenges. The failure to recognize the importance of this crisis of meaning in the genesis of physical and mental disorders is a serious deficit in the current medical system, which often treats the body while ignoring the soul. Dr. Madera has placed psychotherapy , philosophical practices and religion side by side in his discussion as any contemporary search for purpose can and must bring these three ways of searching for meaning together into a common coordinated field of action with a common background. This common background becomes apparent when we identify the common source of inspiration for the shared vocation to transcend egotism: the urge to go beyond the self to save the self through a wider and more all-embracing dimension of meaning.
Location
Belk Centrum
Lenoir-Rhyne University
Hickory, NC
Faculty
Romano Madera, Ph.D., Professor of Moral Philosophy and Philosophical Practices at the University of Milan – Bicocca (Italy)
Romano Madera graduated from the University of Milan in 1971 with a Ph.D. in philosophy later specializing in sociology at the School for Sociology in Milan from 1971-1973. Formerly he was a professor of Philosophy of Social Sciences at the University of Calabria (1977-1982) and Philosophical Anthropology at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (1982-2001). One of the best validated and most effective approaches to changing distressed couple relationships into loving secure bonds is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Thirty years of scientific research validates the success rate of this model and shows its relapse rate is low compared to other couple therapies. 70-75% of couples treated with EFT move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. The core of EFT’s change process is to first help couples recognize and contain the circular patterns that keep them emotionally off balance and in distress, and then help them reshape the relationship bond with specific moments of emotional engagement and vulnerability that pull for attuned and compassionate responses. This process as well as the interventions, steps, and stages of Emotionally Focused Therapy will be explored through video clips. Discussion and video will demonstrate how attachment theory guides couple therapists in working with emotion and in choosing specific moment to moment interventions that transform relational distress into secure bonds of intimacy and love.
Registration will be available beginning in August 2015. Wed, 16 Sep 2015 14:00:00 GMT http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/46047.html Mental Health Classroom Evidencebased Strategies for Obesity Prevention on 9/2/2015 http://northwestahec.wfubmc.edu/rest/index.cfm/event/46966.html This is a blended learning experience with a 2-day face-to-face workshop combined with 4 required webinars and follow-up coaching webinars. This course offers seven hours of medical interpreter training that, when combined with Levels 1 through 3, provides the participant with 40 hours of medical interpreter training, one of the prerequisites required to take the national certification exams. *Note: Only individuals who have completed Level I and Level 2 may attend and must bring their Level I manual.
